Volkswagen Introduces Jetta Hybrid

CarLocate Team, January 12, 2012, 05:34PM

Debuting at the North American International Auto Show this week is the all-new hybrid from Volkswagen – the Jetta Hybrid.

Powering the all-new model is a Volkswagen’s 1.4-Liter turbocharged gas engine as well as an electric motor that will be powered by a 220-volt, 1.1 kilowatt hour battery.  This new hybrid is also the fastest in its class, able to go from 0-60 in just 9 seconds – impressive for a hybrid.  Even with this power the Jetta Hybrid delivers an estimated combined fuel economy figure of 45 MPGs.  In addition the Jetta Hybrid can be driven in pure electric mode at speeds of up to 44 MPH for up to 1.2 miles.

The Jetta Hybrid will also be the first of its kind to come with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This transmission provides super-fast shifting and at 163-lbs weighs significantly less than a conventional automatic – making this one of the lightest hybrids on the road overall.

The new Jetta Hybrid also has a new look compared to the conventional Jetta including a new front airdam, rear diffuser and integrated spoiler to increase aerodynamics. The Jetta Hybrid also includes 15-inch alloy wheels with all-season tires optimized for low rolling resistance. The new model is also identified by Hybrid signatures on the grille, front fenders, and rear deck.

Pricing for the all-new Jetta Hybrid has not yet been announced, but Volkswagen says it will be competitively priced with other hybrids of its class. You can expect to find the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid in dealerships by the end of 2012.

Past Figures, Present Rides: Confucius and the Nissan LEAF

Confucius and the Nissan Leaf

This week Carlocate.com has gone out and managed to get an interview with Confucius via his translator here is the transcript as it occurred.

Carlocate.com- Confucius as a wise man, some might say the wisest man, what car did you pick out for yourself.

Confucius- I went with the Nissan LEAF as it practices the five things everywhere under heaven that constitutes a perfect car…efficiency, reliability, modesty, economical feasibility, and environmental conscientiousness.

Carlocate.com- Some would want to know why you didn’t pick a better looking car that is more regal for a man of your stature.

Confucius- As I always say, everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

Carlocate.com- Wise words, even still, while traveling around China with your followers perhaps you might have wanted a larger vehicle. Something like an SUV to cart around your disciples and books of proverbs?

Confucius- He who will not economize will have to agonize.

Carlocate.com- True, very true, but wouldn’t you want a car that could go faster than the Nissan LEAF to get across a country as large as China?

Confucius- It does not matter how slowly you go, so long as you do not stop.

Carlocate.com- So the parable goes, slow and steady does win the race I guess. What would you say to all the people buying large vehicles and sports cars instead of the LEAF?

Confucius- What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others.

Carlocate.com- Hmmm… very thought provoking, but what about those confident people who just like sports cars or large SUV?

Confucius- To see what is rights and not to do it is want of courage.

Carlocate.com- So you’re saying that people who don’t pick more fuel efficient cars are trying to compensate and are cowards?

Confucius- When emissions rise, think of the consequences.

Carlocate.com- Very true, the environment is very important, but wouldn’t you say the government is doing a good enough job of regulating greenhouse gases now and that electric cars are just a hassle?

Confucius- The superior car, while developing in safety, does not forget that pollution still comes. When in a state of low gas prices he does not forget the possibility of inflation. When all is cool and crisp, he does not forget that global warming may come. This car is not endangered, and its company and all their brands will be preserved.

Carlocate.com- Very sage business advice from Confucius; I think many car companies should listen to this man. Okay, last question, aside from the benefits provided by driving the LEAF was there any advertising campaign or social media that influenced your decision to purchase the LEAF?

Confucius- Fine words and an insinuating appearance are seldom associated with true virtue…but in the LEAF’s case it’s one of those seldom times.

Carlocate.com-Haha, well thanks for the interview Confucius and to all our readers check back in two weeks for another installment of “Past Figures, Present Rides”.

Background Information:

Confucius was a philosopher born in China in 551BC. During his time he preached personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity and other similar values. These thoughts were organized into a system practiced by many in Asian countries. This system/philosophy is known as Confucianism. His teachings were compiled into a book called the Analects of Confucius which is a collection of aphorisms and was a key proponent of the golden rule, “Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself.”

The all-new 2012 Mitsubishi i electric vehicle has scored first-place honors on the EPA’s list of “Fuel Economy Leaders: 2012 Model Year” in the government agency’s annual Fuel Economy Guide.  This award is thanks to the Mitsubishi i’s astonishing EPA-rated 112 combined/126 city/99 highway MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent).

The Fuel Economy Guide is “an annual publication containing the fuel economy estimates for all cars and light trucks. The guide includes information about alternative fueled vehicles, the range of fuel economy for different classes of vehicles, a list of fuel economy leaders, and tips for improving fuel economy.”

The annual Fuel Economy Guide is published together by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE).

“With 17,000 i-MiEV-based units produced for various international markets, we look forward to providing North American consumers with an exceptionally well-engineered electric vehicle that has proven itself to be reliable, safe, efficient, and very affordable in overall price and cost of operation,” said Yoichi Yokozawa, President and CEO of Mitsubishi MotorsNorth America, Inc. “We are very pleased to see that the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy have rated the 2012 Mitsubishi i as the top fuel economy leader in its annual Fuel Economy guide.”
