Week 2
Worst Car to Survive A Zombie Apocalypse Runner-Up: Chevrolet Cruze ECO
While any car in working condition ought to be able to help you outrun a horde of zombies, there is one car that would be the worst of all. The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze ECO.
Now, I know you are asking yourself, isn’t the Cruze ECO an extremely roomy compact car with a peppy engine and fantastic gas mileage?!? Yes, it is. But when GM decided to make more than 40 design changes to the Cruze ECO to make it a more fuel-efficient car – an estimated 28 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway – they made one critical mistake that can affect your survival rate in a zombie attack. GM removed the spare tire from the Cruze ECO and with it, the jacking hardware including the tire iron (or, more correctly, the lug wrench). Removing the spare tire and related hardware made the car 26 lbs. lighter, which helps improve the ECO’s fuel Economy, but it also may make you more vulnerable in a zombie attack.
If you can’t outrun the zombies, you need to be able to kill them, and the tire iron is one of the first weapons of opportunity you’d look for if you were in or around a car. But, as I said earlier, the Cruze ECO doesn’t have a tire iron in the trunk; instead, it has an on-board tire inflator kit. While that inflator kit is probably a safer, more-convenient method of re-inflating a flat-tire under everyday conditions, it’s not going to do you a bit of good against flesh-starved zombies. So, if you’re driving a Cruze ECO, you’d better have a backup plan for zombie defense… just in case, of course.
Look back at week 1 to see one of the runners-up for Best Car for Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse.
