Small, compact cars have always been likened to sardine cans with the idea that they would crush as easily as a can when involved in an accident. But the most recent crash-test results and ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) show that these cars are safer and stronger than the general public thinks.
During the most recent tests 6 small cars earned the Top Safety Pick award. In order to earn this award cars must achieve a top result of ‘good’ in all categories as well as be available with electronic stability control.
The newest small cars vehicles making the Top Safety Pick list are:
• 2012 Ford Focus
• 2012 Honda Civic
• 2011 Hyundai Elantra
• 2011 Nissan JUKE
• 2011 Toyota Prius
• 2011 Lexus CT 200h
According to IIHS chief research officer, “The new ratings demonstrate that small cars are much safer than they used to be.” This is great news- because the law of physics will always apply in cars!
