U.S. car dealers started the month with the lowest number of in-stock vehicles for any June on record - and one of the lowest months of all time - as reported this week in Automotive News.

For new car buyers, this news means fewer cars for you to choose from on dealers’ lots, which can definitely be frustrating if you’re ready to buy a new car right now.

You’ll find particularly short days of supply if you’re searching for a car from one of these top-selling automaker groups: Hyundai-Kia, Nissan/Infiniti, General Motors, Chrysler Group, Honda/Acura, Ford Motor Company, and Toyota/Scion/Lexus. To help get more cars to dealers’ lots sooner, GM plans to keep its factories open during its traditional summer shutdown, normally scheduled for early July. It will be interesting to see whether other automakers follow suit or whether short supplies remain through for new 2010 model year cars.
