MINI Has the Edge on Fun, Even If They Don't Have It on the Track
On June 21 at Road Atlanta’s in-field, go-kart course, the MINI Cooper S battled the Porsche 911 Carrera S… and lost, but only by mere seconds (1 minute 9.906 seconds for the MINI and 1 minute 7.854 seconds for the Porsche, to be exact). As a result, MINI’s president must wear a t-shirt saying “Porsche Has Beaten Us” and Porsche fans can once again be safe in knowing their sports car is unmatched.

Sponsored by MINI USA, the automaker initially tried to get Porsche to supply a driver. When Porsche politely declined, saying that they don’t race “for fame, stunts or publicity” in a response letter to MINI’s challenge, MINI held a contest to find a driver. Cory Friedman was chosen out of the 50 submissions they received form Porsche drivers around the world. Brad Davis was selected to drive the MINI.
While the race didn’t turn out the way MINI had hoped, the MINI vs. Porsche challenge still turned out to be a fun way to engage fans and have some lively discussion.
The event created quite a buzz on MINI USA’s Facebook page, enough so that the automaker allowed the first 400 fans to show up to Road Atlanta to get in free. However, fans who wanted to watch the race online were largely disappointed when MINI’s player crashed.
Today, the automaker has posted a recap of the race on YouTube. You can watch it here.
Anyone for a rematch?
