The Chevrolet Volt, GM’s new electric car, is contributing to helping the environment besides just lowering greenhouse gases with its battery-powered engine.
The Chevy Volt is using 212,500 lbs of recycled oil booms, which were used and rendered worthless in the recent BP oil spill, to make the air deflector in the cars. The air deflectors are 25% boom material and 75% of other recycled materials left over from GM’s other projects.

For those lacking context of just how much 212,500 lbs of recycle boom actually is here are some interesting statistics:
• It generates 227 miles worth of boom material- the distance from Yankee Stadium in NYC to Fenway Park in Boston.
• Saves 29,000 gallons of water and oil from being thrown out, which equals 1,160 ten minute showers
• It eliminates 149 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions from entering the air, the same weight as eight and a half semi-trucks.
That is quite a bit of material recycled and this is just a small part of GM’s efforts to help the environment. In 2010 alone, 92% of the waste generated by GM was recycled.
The Chevrolet Volt is not the only one cleaning up the environment, today the CarLocate Crew is doing their part with a trip to a local park to pick up trash and make the City of Dayton a cleaner, more beautiful place!
