Hitting the Road This Holiday Season? Beware of Drivers Who Won’t Put Down the Internet.

CarLocate Team, December 14, 2012, 12:03PM

State Farm has released its annual research report on distracted driving, and not a moment too soon. As we hit the roads this holiday season, it is more important than ever to be mindful of drivers around you, especially those who might not be paying as much attention as they should be.

Texting and driving has been a concern for many years, but an entirely new concern has surfaced since most cell phones now have internet browsing capability: Webbing and driving. Four years of data shows a significant increase in the number of people accessing the internet while driving- scary stuff, right?

It’s no surprise that the brunt of distracted driving falls mostly on young adults, but data indicates motorists of all age groups are using the web while driving. In general, accessing the internet while driving across all age groups, increased from 13% in 2009 to 21% in 2012.

Across many states, laws are being implemented banning the use of cell phones without hand-free devices in cars, however almost two-thirds of people believe this is not enough. Some companies are considering technology that would limit the ability to use a cell phone while the vehicle is moving. 45% of people surveyed were likely to support this type of technology.

This holiday season, put your phones away and watch out for others who may not have taken the same precautions.

How carmakers are using technology to make us safer

CarLocate Team, October 26, 2012, 12:39PM

Car manufacturers are struggling to find the right balance between loading up new car models with modern technology and keeping the vehicle safe to operate and free of distractions. We’ve seen all kinds of ideas, from cars that communicate with one another to disabling cell phones inside cars so they can’t work when the car is in motion.

One way car manufacturers have really nailed the balance between technology and safety is with voice-activated technology. Install all the high-tech touch screens you want, as long as there is an easy-to-use, intuitive voice-activation system so we don’t have to take our eyes off the road to use the GPS or change the vent settings!

Another way manufacturers are balancing technology and safety is by incorporating Bluetooth into almost every new car. There is now virtually no need to take your cell phone out while you are in the car, which is definitely a feature we applaud. Make calls, send texts, listen to your music, and stay connected to social media, all through your car’s voice-activated Bluetooth system - and keep your hands where they need to be: on the wheel!

While we think these features will stick around for good, we can’t help but wonder where auto manufacturers are headed next. With endless talk of cars that will “drive themselves,” we wonder just how far this technology will take us. And, is it really safe?

Volvo, leaders in auto safety, is currently testing a technology that would track driver eye movements. When the car senses the driver is not looking at the road, it will flash a series of lights on the dashboard to get the driver’s focus back on the road. Cadillac is testing something similar, which would use a vibrating seat that pulses when the car veers out of its lane. Lexus has a system which monitors the driver and uses flashing lights and warning chimes to regain driver attention, and can automatically brake if the driver does not take control.

From what we can see, these technologies are safety steps to keep drivers aware and focused on the road and could eventually be incorporated into a car that drives itself. Could these be the first steps to creating a car that drives itself and, at the same time, making sure there is a competent driver behind the wheel to take control in the event something goes wrong? Only time will tell… but for now we can put these newer technologies to good use to keep us safe while driving today.

Older Driver Safety Awareness Week

CarLocate Team, December 7, 2011, 05:43PM
The “silver tsunami” as it’s been dubbed by AAA is upon us and in less than 10 years one in four licensed drivers will be age 65 or older.  Research shows that people today live an average of about 7 to 10 years beyond their safe driving ability – but the thought of giving up ones independence is a hard concept to grasp, and many families don’t know how to start talking to their aging parents. To aid aging drivers and their families for the coming storm, AAA is helping to promote Older Driver Safety Awareness Week, this week to help get the conversation started.

“AAA hopes to raise visibility of resources and tools that will help families address real and perceived challenges associated with driving and aging,” said Jake Nelson, director, AAA Traffic Safety Advocacy and Research. AAA is promoting the importance of communication between older drivers and their families, so that they’ll be able to safely navigate the issue.

To help manage the effects of aging on driving ability, AAA offers the following resources for older drivers:

- AAA Roadwise Review – a computer based self-screening tool designed to assess a driver’s functional abilities important to safe driving.

- CarFit and AAA’s Smart Features for Mature Drivers – help enhance senior’s comfort and safety while driving.

- Safe Driving for Mature Operators – classroom and online courses to provide driver training to help address the changes caused by aging and how a driver may compensate.

Conversations about safe driving can evoke strong emotional reactions as concerns about personal independence and managing other day-to-day activities may come into question. AAA encourages seniors and their families to approach these sensitive conversations as opportunities for constructive communication and problem solving.
