Vehicle Financing

With prices averaging more than $28,000 for a new vehicle and $15,000 for a used vehicle, most consumers need financing or leasing to acquire a vehicle.

In some cases, buyers use "direct lending:" they obtain a loan directly from a finance company, bank or credit union. In direct lending, a buyer agrees to pay the amount financed, plus an agreed-upon finance charge, over a period of time. Once a buyer and a vehicle dealership enter into a contract to purchase a vehicle, the buyer uses the loan proceeds from the direct lender to pay the dealership for the vehicle.

Take the Gas Saving Quiz

The Car Care Council's Gas Saving Quiz is a reminder to motorists that the number of miles per gallon (mpg) a car gets is directly related to driving behavior and vehicle maintenance.

TRUE OR FALSE:

Properly inflated tires improve gas mileage.

Show Answer

True. When tires are not properly inflated, fuel costs can be as much as three to five cents higher per gallon. Tire pressure should be checked at least monthly, including the spare.

Aggressive driving and jackrabbit starts do not affect fuel economy.

Show Answer

False. Aggressive driving and rapid acceleration can reduce gas mileage as much as 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent on city streets. When a vehicle is left idling, it wastes gas and gets zero mpg.
